Every July 31, Argentina commemorates National Steel Industry Day in honor of General and Engineer Manuel Nicolás Savio, the visionary who laid the foundations of the country's steel industry. Mining is expected to become another major growth driver in the coming years, particularly as large-scale copper projects such as Vicuña move toward construction, scheduled to begin in 2027. These developments will require significant quantities of steel for processing plants, pipelines, industrial facilities and supporting infrastructure, while also demanding materials with higher performance standards.
"Today, several industries require steels with far more demanding specifications than those used in traditional applications. In the energy sector, for example, critical infrastructure such as gas pipelines must withstand high pressures, corrosive environments and harsh operating conditions. That requires steel mills to operate with tighter process control and greater production efficiency", says Juan Pablo Otero, Commercial Specialist for the Steel Industry at Grupo Calidra.
In this environment, lime plays an even more strategic role. During the steelmaking process, calcium oxide acts as a flux, removing impurities from the molten metal and promoting slag formation, an essential step in producing cleaner, higher-quality steel. "Higher-quality lime improves efficiency throughout the steelmaking process and helps manufacturers consistently achieve the quality standards required by today's most demanding applications", Otero explains.
