Epiroc announced the arrival in Argentina of the first two SmartROC D65 surface drilling rigs, which will initially be deployed for pre-stripping activities and subsequently for pre-splitting operations. Their introduction includes an initial phase of manual operation, followed by a gradual transition toward autonomous systems.
According to the company, the rigs feature integrated technology that enables different levels of automation, including the Common Automation Panel (CAP), a platform designed to support the transition toward new operating methods.
Pablo Nifure, Business Manager of Epiroc Southern Cone's Surface Drilling & OreBody Solutions Division, explained that this technological transition will enable higher levels of automation in drilling activities.
"This transition will be possible thanks to the technology integrated into the rigs, including the Common Automation Panel (CAP), a platform that enables higher levels of automation and supports the transition toward new operating methods, helping to reduce personnel exposure and strengthen on-site safety," the executive stated.
The SmartROC D65 rigs are designed for surface drilling operations and feature capabilities focused on automation, precision, and operational consistency. According to Epiroc, these characteristics make it possible to optimize different stages of the drilling process and progressively incorporate new technological capabilities.
