Canadian company Aldebaran Resources has successfully completed its 2024–2025 drilling campaign at the Altar Project, located in the Calingasta Department, reaching a total of 25,100 meters drilled—surpassing its initial target. The company’s CEO, John Black, emphasized that this season marks a turning point for the project, transitioning from an intensive exploration phase to planning for mine development.

During a meeting with the Minister of Mining, Juan Pablo Perea, and Technical Secretary Pablo Fernández, Aldebaran’s CEO John Black highlighted that the team achieved all technical and operational objectives set for the season. Among the most significant advances, he noted the collection of samples for metallurgical studies and a strengthened focus on the project's environmental aspects. “We are at a key transitional stage. This year, we began charting the path toward project development, aiming to turn Altar into a world-class copper mine,” said Black.

A major milestone will be the presentation of the Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) in September 2025, which will provide the first comprehensive view of the project's economic feasibility. This study will evaluate two processing scenarios: one based on flotation and concentration to produce copper concentrate, and another using leaching, which would allow for the direct production of industrial-grade copper cathodes in Argentina.

Aldebaran’s Vice President and Country Manager, Javier Robeto, emphasized the project’s technical complexity and the company’s commitment to responsible and sustainable development. “We are evaluating all alternatives to maximize the project’s value, considering not only the economic aspects but also social and environmental impacts,” he said.

The next major step will be the development of the Prefeasibility Study, expected by the end of 2026, which will solidify the long-term vision for Altar as one of the most promising copper projects in San Juan.

Ignacio Morello, Chief Corporate Banking Officer at the bank, outlines the strategy behind the +Mining unit, which is focused on meeting the financing needs of Argentina’s mining ecosystem. Instruments such as leasing, invoice-based lending, and capital markets funding are helping providers invest—even when they lack a strong financial track record. “We’ve managed to disburse funds to mining companies in less than 24 hours,” he says.

The European Union Brings Key Financial Delegation to Discuss Investments in Lithium and Copper

The European Union (EU) has identified lithium, copper, cobalt, nickel, gallium, boron, and rare earth elements as critical minerals essential to the energy transition and technological innovation. In this context, it launched a series of initiatives aimed at diversifying its supply sources—primarily to reduce dependence on China—by promoting the extraction, processing, and recycling of these minerals within its own borders.
